Safety Data Sheet

Use it safely.

Charcoal is a powerful fuel. Read and follow these guidelines every time you light up. Keep this page bookmarked for your records.

1. Product & Hazards

  • Product: Natural hardwood lump charcoal / briquettes for cooking and grilling use only.
  • Combustible solid. Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide (CO) — an odourless, colourless gas that can be fatal in enclosed spaces.
  • Dust may cause minor eye and respiratory irritation.

2. Lighting & Use

  • Use only outdoors or in a fully ventilated, purpose-built grill area.
  • Light using a chimney starter, natural firelighters, or an electric starter. Do NOT use petrol, kerosene, or other volatile fuels.
  • Allow charcoal to ash over (grey coating) before cooking — typically 15–20 minutes.
  • Never leave a lit grill unattended. Keep children and pets at a safe distance.

3. Ventilation — Carbon Monoxide

  • NEVER burn charcoal indoors, in tents, caravans, garages, or any enclosed space — including for heating.
  • CO has no smell. Symptoms of exposure include headache, dizziness, nausea, and loss of consciousness.
  • If CO exposure is suspected, move the person to fresh air immediately and seek emergency medical care.

4. Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, ignition sources, oxidisers, and flammable materials.
  • Keep bags sealed when not in use. Moisture reduces burn quality and may produce more smoke.
  • Do not stack near walls or under flammable structures.

5. First Aid

  • Burns: Cool the affected area under running water for at least 10 minutes. Do not apply creams. Seek medical advice for serious burns.
  • Eyes: Flush with clean water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Inhalation of smoke or CO: Move to fresh air. If symptoms persist or the person is unconscious, call emergency services immediately.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice.

6. Disposal of Used Charcoal

  • Allow charcoal to burn out completely and cool for at least 48 hours before disposal.
  • Alternatively, douse thoroughly with water, stir, and confirm there are no embers before discarding.
  • Dispose of cold ash in a metal container. Never place hot or warm ash in plastic, paper, or wheelie bins.
